21 Things You Didn’t Know About Me

I filmed this video about 3 weeks ago, which I wanted as an intro for my new YouTube channel design (YouTube is updating channels now, and you can select a video to run for people who are not yet subscribers). So I thought, hey, why not film one of those ubiquitous “## Things You Didn’t Know About Me” videos that are so prevalent on the internet? (And by prevalent, I mean, this search has over 2.6 million results.) But then I kind of forgot all about it because, well…other posts got in the way.

My memory was jogged when Emily posted 20 things about herself, and the venom that spewed out in the comments about such a sweet and quirky video was so disheartening!

So without further ado, I give you the 21 things you may not have known about me. Completely honest. Every fact is true. Just ask my mom. 😉 Let me know what you think in the comments!

I’d like to dedicate the video to Em, in hopes that she is never discouraged from being herself and acting a little silly now and then. I do it all the time.

you’re hysterical! the hanson pic is so accurate!! 🙂 hahaha … i liked Emily’s video too, i couldn’t understand why some people seemed personally offended by it? so strange.

I think some people may have been looking for an excuse to hate – because she’s so put together and polished on her blog, she has a carefully crafted image & brand (which is admirable!) and the moment she let her guard down for the first time, they sank in their teeth. It’s a shame because all of us are human and vulnerable. perhaps me moreso than other bloggers – I’ve got a lot that people could give me flak about, and anybody who says it doesn’t hurt is lying to you!

wait we have the exact same most embarrassing moment!!! how in my 29 years have i never met someone with my exact same story haha!! and it was 1st grade for me too! i was sick the week before when they sent the ” dont wear your costume” note home – i cant go to costume parties anymore!

    • 04.05.2013 / 1:28 pm

Uncanny!! It sucks, doesn’t it? Now we always look like the party poopers for not dressing up…I’m like, trust me…I’ve been there.

Haha you really did look like him… Awesome video. I loved watching it! It’s so nice to get to know you a little more.

Isn’t it crazy though?? My family paused the video and stood around gawking/laughing for a good while about it. Haha.

Awesome video! I almost died when you showed us your Taylor Hanson moment! hahaAnd what kind of dog is that?!?! Too cute!
My husband overheard that you designed and coded your blog and he was really impressed (he’s a programmer)!

I was also puzzled by the nasty comments on Emily’s post, which I found so fun and charming! It’s a shame how people assume that because they have only seen her presenting herself a certain way for her posts that they believe that is how she is all the time, thus they were disappointed (and downright mean) when they saw another side to her. Honestly, I have wanted to start a blog for a long time but put it off for a while because I wasn’t sure if I could handle negative comments! lol

    • 04.05.2013 / 1:27 pm

Don’t worry – not everyone receives negative comments. I rarely receive one. I think it may just depend on how you present yourself to your readers. If you’re not prepared to show a little vulnerability from the start, you won’t come off as approachable. And since most people actually ARE approachable, I think that would be a crying shame to miss out on!

Cute! Very endearing. I always have to resist the urge to copy you!

  7. 04.05.2013 / 1:29 pm

I loved your Hanson fact, I laughed out loud! As for Emily’s post, I unfortunately thought that hers felt a bit contrived and forced whereas your sense of humor here felt more natural.

    • 04.05.2013 / 1:33 pm

glad you laughed at my hanson doppleganger years! haha!

I do feel like it takes literally months, sometimes years, of practice on camera to actually feel natural enough that it conveys on camera. I am pretty sure if one looked back through my videos some would seem pretty darn contrived! just a shame Emily has to “practice” that technique in front of a much bigger audience, especially because she doesn’t have a track record for being goofy like I do.

      Glad you liked the video!!

Another GREAT and endearing video!!! Oh my gosh about the day early costume and you DID look like a Hanson. But what I’m most impressed with is your TALENT — photography, computers, programming. Truly talented!!!

I absolutely love that both you and Emily put your guards down and showed a side of yourselves to your readers that we don’t always get to see. The negativity component to all of this is such a shame and a waste of energy. I’m glad that despite the nay-Sayers you keep putting yourself out there!

I really liked the video (though the ending was a bit strange for me since I had just watched Emily’s video before it almost seemed like you were doing the same movements as she was at the end) but otherwise I really enjoyed it. Some of the things that we did not know were really awesome (the Hanson fact was … perfect. It was really funny and just made me smile). And I love that you understand computer programming and were creative with the early blog & magazine. You seem like a pretty amazing person and it’s a bit sad that I don’t know you in real life.
    If you’re ever in Prague… 😉

Ha, thanks Veronika! Yeah I found it eery too, having filmed the video 3 weeks ago–perhaps Emily and I are more alike than we realize!

Thanks for your sweet comments. I’m happy to know you in virtual life! 😉

Such a fun video! I am the complete opposite when it comes to apples, pears, and bananas. I REFUSE to eat bananas or anything with bananas in it (I’ve been that way my entire life), but give me an apple or pear and I’m a happy gal! Also, my first car was a silver VW Beetle. It was totaled when someone ran a red light and hit it… thankfully, nobody else was in the car and I wasn’t hurt, but I do miss it a lot!

I love this video! It’s great to see your personality shine through and learn some things about the bloggers you follow! It’s totally crazy that you’ve done so much design, computing, and writing but have chosen a medical field career path!

Such a great video! I am totally with you on the outwardly slob/inwardly perfectionist thing… also nice to see someone who can code and design their own blog!! Respect for that, it’s what’s holding me back (it’s been awhile… I am not looking forward to playing around with a grid layout, grr). Also, can relate with building a great PC that worked well– until I bought my first Macbook Pro! Keep up the awesomeness. <3

What a fun and great video! What did your Mom say about your arson attempt?
I can’t believe that Emily got negative comments! I watched her video, she was so sweet and charming. People never stop to amaze me…

Super cute vid. Hearing your stories make you sound much more real and less like an internet blog figure.

I don’t understand why people feel the need to be so nasty! I feel like no one remembers the old adage “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!” Constructive criticism is one thing, but reading the comments on her blog made me sad…we are all human and words can hurt :/

Anyways, I love you and Emily! Keep being awesome!

You are so lovely and down to earth! Made me laugh a few times, especially with that Hanson photo. As soon as it popped up with you on the left, I kept thinking wow you looked like him A LOT. Turned out I kept looking at the right photo since it was brighter in colors so I didn’t notice hahaha.

I’ve been blogging and not blogging on and off for a couple years and just can’t seem to figure out what to blog about besides my daily photo and food adventures, sometimes fashion. I first came to read your advice on WordPress or Blogger and went with Blogger, but now I am back on WordPress haha,. Yes, a little neurotic, but guess you gotta go through it to find your “place” in the online blogging world. Keep up the fabulous site, you are refreshing!

I love this! “I punched a boy in the face.” I bet you did! Your blog is such a perfect mix of life, fashion and fun. You don’t tell us every minute of every day but you share enough about you so that we feel like we know you (or at least I do!) I appreciate that so much!-Ash

just remember Shelley, an apple a day keeps the doctor away! Yes the one thing my father taught me about bullies was aim a punch at their nose as a last resort – and as you found, it works! A lovely video thanks.
