A Very Merry Half-Birthday

Greetings, all! Today is my half-birthday. When’s yours? Hope you all had a fun October 31st! The pic above is of the pumpkin I carved (and H designed) sort-of last minute last night, so I called it the “quick & dirty pumpkin.”  It also happens to be white (my personal favorite), which in my opinion is much scarier than your average orange variety. He was…

Bring it on

It’s nearly a week since my last post and I hardly noticed; time has flown by so quickly.  I completed all of my makeup exams (yay!) and have basically finished covering all of the lectures from last week that I missed, with the exception of a couple of Physical Diagnosis lectures and a lecture on child abuse…those will just have to wait.  From now until…

No Man Is An Island

I have completed nearly all (save 1) of my makeup exams, including Fundamentals of Clinical Medicine (FCM), Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Pathology, Pharmacology, and Behavioral Sciences. On Monday I will take my Genetics final exam (gulp!). I do want you to check out and give feedback on the new blog design. I liked the previous one (all flowers and girlishness) but I felt all the design detracted away from the whole point of this site: my blog posts. One thing I do have to mention, is how grateful I am for the tremendous support that has enveloped me after the tragic loss of my brother earlier this month. Friends, colleagues, mentors, relatives: all have offered support, condolences, sage advice, a listening ear, open arms, study tips, and encouragement during these past, very difficult weeks.

One day at a time

Today at 1pm I am taking my FCM & PBL exams with rest of the class. To say I am nervous about my classmates’ reactions to me would be an understatement.  In fact, I am more nervous about what will go on BEFORE the test, than the actual test itself.  But I can’t hide forever.  It’s just so hard, being strong for the family and…

My eulogy for Erik

On Monday I stood before the mass of people who came to pay their respects to Erik, at his funeral. This is what I had to say.

Erik Medhus 9/21/89-10/6/09

Yesterday, I wrote my little brother’s obituary. ERIK RUNE MEDHUS, age 20, passed away October 6, 2009 in Houston, Texas. Erik was born in Houston on September 21, 1989. He graduated from Westchester High School in May of 2007, and was attending Houston Community College on track to becoming a certified welder. Among Erik’s many passions were his family, friends, music, motor sports, and anything…

See You On The Other Side

And so begins crunch time– 2nd year’s 1st round of exams. I’ll be taking exams from now until the end of next week. So if you don’t see or hear from me, it doesn’t mean I’m dead. At least, not yet. Here’s my schedule. Friday, 10/9: Genetics Final Exam Monday, 10/12: Pathology Exam Tuesday, 10/13: Behavioral Science Exam Thursday, 10/15: Pharmacology Exam Friday, 10/16: PBL/FCM…

I’m all wedding-ed out

Houston and I have been to more weddings this year than I can count on my fingers. The funny thing is, 10:1 of them have been his friends getting hitched, not mine. Finally, last weekend, we went to the wedding of one of my friends. Better than friend, she is my Big Sis! And no, I did not spontaneously spawn an older sister–she’s my Big…

Women vs. Men

I find it interesting that women complain on and on about the burden of being female: menstruation, menopause, childbirth, breastfeeding, osteoporosis, etc. But aside from autoimmune diseases, women really have it a lot better than men. Here’s why. Women live longer than men. Known fact. We enjoy more sunrises & sunsets, and more time with our kids & grandkids. But yes, we miss you men when…

Oh, so you want an update do you?

Things have been pretty stressful since the move. The house is coming together, slowly but surely. Yesterday I lugged the boxes I broke down up to the attic for storage, and finally tackled the room I’d been dreading: my teeny closet. Dreading, because it is about 1/4th the size of my closet at the Valencia, and trying to unpack boxes within this teeny closet was…
