As a child I suffered from a handful of skin conditions. As a physician, I now know to call them "atopic". Eczema, rashes, dry skin, hives - you name it, I had it. Interestingly enough, as the name atopic suggests, it comes from within me. It has nothing to do with touching the wrong plant, using the wrong cream, or being allergic to medication. Quite simply, this diathesis of skin problems originates from the body's own immune system.Early on, I quickly grew comfortable in long pants, long sleeves. Not only because I had a tendency to develop eczema a.k.a. those dry flaky patches that tend to crop up in flexor surfaces (i.e. inside elbows, behind knees, in-between fingers), but also because I just didn't like the shape of my legs as I matured. I thought their shape to be unsightly. The models in the magazines (I was a 90's kid growing up at the height of "heroin-chic") all had stick-thin legs, and clothes just looked better on them.
During the winter time I take full advantage of the weather as an excuse to basically never let my legs see the light of day.I'm going to change that.
