Favorite Products of 2012

It’s about that time of year, folks. No, I’m not talking about the time where we all make fun of my facial expression above (we’ll save that for later). I’m talking about that time when we pack up our Christmas ornaments, throw out the Christmas tree, and sit down with a hot mug of hot cocoa, log on to YouTube…and watch 2012 Favorites videos. No? You don’t do the same thing, and look forward to it all year like I do? Well, maybe I’m obsessed. And maybe you don’t care, but if you do, you can watch mine. I also talk a bit in the end about some changes I’ll be making to the blog this year. And some bloopers at the end, of course! Links to products below.

What are some of YOUR favorite beauty products in the past year? Let us know in the comments below, I’d love to discover some new favorites for 2013!

P.S. – somebody commented on the YouTube video page that I seemed down – I explained why over there, in case you felt the same way.

Maybelline Falsies Flared has been my favorite mascara for a while! It’s amazing. I also just picked up a Color Tatto shadow today at Target and can’t wait to use it!

They’re amazing! Just a word of advice: don’t use eye primer with these long-wear shadows. It messes it up for some reason!

Yes, please and thank you 🙂 I’ve heard so much about the BDIB Movement and I’m dying to try it out xoxo

Kristina I must tell you that you are the reason I am addicted to beauty You Tubers. It started with your videos and that created a slippery slope into many, many others as well! It has helped in my makeup purchasing so much with much less disappointments! I love starting my Saturday mornings with coffee and YouTube… Also, the lipstick you are wearing looks gorgeous on you.

    • 01.09.2013 / 10:01 pm

That’s so sweet of you to say. I admit, I spend my days off doing the exact same thing!

Hey Kristina! No need to apologize for being “late” on posting… People will always appreciate your post and recommendations regardless of timing 🙂 Also, you do these videos/website design/outfit posts/collaborations because YOU love to!! So don’t let other people’s pessimistic comments get you down. Yes, you do it for “us” too, but in reality, it’s what makes you happy 🙂 Some people are just naturally mean, I always take things personally too, but just try to keep your chin up!

AND, you’ve tripled your readers/subscribers since I started reading over two years ago, so you must be doing something right 🙂

I LOVE Nars blush in “exhibit A” and Nars lipstick in “Heatwave”. I also concur with Nars Sheer Flow foundation… just started using in and I am so happy with it. I have very fair skin and there are SO many tones.

    • 01.11.2013 / 2:55 am

I’ve heard so much about NARS heatwave–must check it out next time I’m at a counter!

Oh my gah…the blooper reel…hysterical! I love that you did that! And try not to let the haters bother you. Some people have their sh*t together (YOU), and some don’t, and the only way they can feel better about that is to attack you.

I’ve waited all day to watch this. Your videos are always my favorite!
It was because of a previous post that I asked Santa for the Advanced Night Repair aaaand I love it!  I suffer from that awful cystic acne (and the scars it leaves behind) too, so I was so delighted to see you rave about this product. My skin seems to not get as oily as quickly as it did before adding it to my daily regimen and I’m beginning to see my scars fade. So a big THANK YOU to you!

Most excited to try the Falsies but am also intrigued by the Chanel foundation.  Even though I have problematic skin, I’ve never worn foundation.  Partly because I’m scared of it causing breakouts/slicking down my face and not having a clue how to match my skin tone.  I do, however, use and love Stila’s One Step Correct primer.  I can’t say it does everything it claims (which is a lot) but it definitely evens me out, stalls the oil slick, and minimizes my pores (to an extent).  It’s pricey ($36), but Ulta sometimes has those 20% off coupons.

I also agree with the commenter who suggested more science!  You’re such a great teacher!

Can’t wait to see what the new year brings!

LOVED the bloopers at the end:))) (“Babe, are you printing?” had me literally laughing out loud at work – hey, I was on my break.)
Thank you for this. And for your blog. You’re my role model 🙂

I just picked up the Rimmel Stay Matte powder in translucent the other night. I am only on Day 2 of using it, so the verdict is probably still out (not sure if it will break me out, etc.), but so far, I really like it! I was so glad to see this post and to hear it come highly recommended from you, too! Quick question: how do you typically apply this powder? Do you use a make-up brush, or a typical circular compact applicator powder “puff” thingy? Since it does not come with anything, I assumed that a brush was the best option, but maybe there is a better way?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again! I love your blog. Before fortuitously stumbling across it, I’d never really read a beauty blog before or watched and beauty tutorials on YouTube. You’ve opened up a whole new world for me, and I am quickly becoming a beauty product junkie!! 😉

    • 01.12.2013 / 12:56 am

Hi lauren! I usually apply it with a big fluffy brush to the center of my face and forehead 🙂

  12. 01.10.2013 / 7:17 pm

Thanks for doing this video girl! 🙂 I just ordered the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo thanks to your review… I have similar issues so I hope it will help out 🙂  Want to try out a couple other products too when it is time to buy new!

Well, I for one love your blog and your videos. I started reading beauty blogs about a year and a half ago and yours is the only one I still keep up with on a regular basis (others just come and go). I just love your style, your personality, and your insightful comments. It’s sad how the internet seems to bring out the worst in some people. The anonymity of it makes them brave but I think it’s just pitiful – I always want to say to them “get off the computer and get a life. Really.”
Anyway, keep up the great work – my own personal style has improved so much because of you! 🙂

I just found your blog and I love it. I loved your favourites vid and your bloopers were hilarious. Please make more videos.

  15. 01.10.2013 / 9:42 pm

I love your YouTube videos. I’ve been lurking around them for a good long time! I’m actually not a huge fan of most vlogs because people tend to witter on without much to say or just showcase their hauls, but I feel like even in haul videos you have interesting things to say about the products and you come across very genuinely.
Happy New Year! (And the idea of paring down sounds great. It’s always good to get back to basics sometimes!)

Thank you for taking the time to make these videos! I’ve been reading your blog for some time now but have never commented… just felt compelled this time to add to all of the positive comments 🙂   I’ve taken several of your recommendations on makeup and I’ve come to really trust your opinion!  I think your videos are great and you come across as very sincere and genuine 🙂 so keep it up!

Love your blog…and videos. Too many bloggers have gotten caught up in their own hype, so thanks for always being genuine and I look forward to your 2013 posts. As for your favorites, I’m always looking for good foundations and can’t wait to try out your NARS recommendation. Actually, I have quiet a “to buy” list now. Ultra will be happy with me…hubby, not so much.

Yay! I love Favorites Videos and I’ve been watching a lot of 2012 Favorites lately. I also just want to say that I think it’s great that you made this video even though you were feeling down. I don’t make YouTube videos, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about. My major hesitation is when I see how critical and mean people can be in the comments. I know there are so many positive supportive people out there but somehow the negative words stick with us. I love your blog and your videos!

Nice review! The moisturizer sounds really nice, I like that it’s light, keep the skin tone even, and prevents breakouts. Your skin looks really nice so keep it up! My favorite skin care product of 2012 is Green Clay facial mask by Renu Derma. It dries to a crackle, tightens the skin, deeply cleanses, and leaves your face feeling firm, smooth, healthy, and wonderful! I love the best facial masks so it was perfect!http://www.beautifulfacial.com

I am so sorry that people are posting negative comments about you  on the Internet.  I happen to love your blog and read it and watch your videos quite often.  I cannot use a ton of the beauty ideas because our skin tones are so different (I’m African American); however, I find myself watching them anyway.  That is just how good you are!  🙂  Love that you put yourself out there.  Keep up the good work!  Oh, and my husband is a physician, and we were married during residency, so I know how insane your day job is!  I am amazed you can do a blog and do it so well with those hours!

I love your lipstick in this video, so pretty. I can’t believe you take the time to blog and post videos given how busy your life must be as a resident. But I’ve just recently found your blog and love reading it and hearing about your favorite products. I especially like your splurge vs. steal posts! You’re doing a great job :). Boo to naysayers!!

Krisina,  you are like a breath of fresh air in land of bloggers.  Don’t let negative people get you down.  There are only 2 blogs that I visit on the daily for the last couple of years (PSS and ChannelingErik).  Sending you love and light (sparkly of course) and a wonderful 2013!

Just want to say I love your blog! Being from Houston, it is hard to find make up that doesn’t melt due to the humidity here… so you are a great help. I was wondering if you bought your Real Techniques brush in a store in Houston or just on line? I’ve heard so much about them but I would rather buy them in person. Anyways GREAT JOB!

Just watched this video and when you said you had an obsession with foundations I knew I had to tell you about this amazing new product I found. It’s Dr. Jart’s Water Fuse Beauty Balm SPF 25 PA++. This stuff is amazing!! It feels so natural, and is a corrector, primer, moisturizer, SPF all in one. What really amazed me about this is that I have very fair skin, but my daughter is biracial so has a way darker skin tone than mine. I had her try it, and it worked on her as well. I ordered it through Sephora. Let me know if you try it:)

Hi! I just discovered you and I think you are fabulous! I love that you use drug store brands as well as prestige cosmetics. I recently became a make up junkie and love, love, love these kind of videos. My favorite products this year have to be my Stila Eye Crayon in Kitten, my NARS duo eye shadow in Madrague, my Tarte cheek stain in Blissful, Josie Marans tinted moisturizer in Butter, Benefits Big Beautiful Eyes eyeshadow palette, and Benefits Watts Up! Can you tell I’m a super make up addict? Also, please don’t let nasty, mean people get you down. They are trash and if they don’t like your videos then they shouldn’t watch them, much less comment on them. Like they say, haters gonna hate right? I on the other hand think you are beautiful and funny and I love your blog!

  47. 02.11.2013 / 8:28 am

Your reviews are absolutely fabulous and have led me to some of my favorite beauty products! Thank you!!
