My Wedding Shoes

Friends, meet shoes. Shoes, meet friends. The tale of these shoes is a saga to say the least, and this wouldn’t be a very interesting post without a backstory, now would it? Read on!

The Manolo Blahnik Love Story

I sat down on the couch one day and flipped on the television. Scrolling through the guide, I noticed the Sex & The City movie was on. I can’t pass on some good Carrie time, so I flipped to it and settled in. Two soft and mushy hours later, I watched (for the billionth time) as Big proposed to Carrie by slipping on her blue bejeweled Manolo Blahniks.

That’d be a great wedding shoe, I thought unoriginally. Thousands of brides–well, maybe hundreds–have worn these shoes on their wedding day, and it’s probably not only due to the fact that it provides a rather stylish and convenient something blue.

$945, ouch! I physically recoiled. I’ve never paid that much for a pair of shoes in my life. I’ve never paid more than $200 for a pair of shoes. How could I spend a thousand on a single pair? How do so many brides do this??

Reading more about the shoes on my favorite shoe forum (yes, I have one), I realized that women generally rationalize their wedding day as the one time (or first time) in their life to buy a pair of luxury designer shoes. I’m talking Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, Brian Atwood, Yves Saint Laurent…of course, many brides don’t go this route, and frankly I can’t blame them, since you’ll probably trash them on their debut day by dancing them to death. Or take them off halfway through the reception.

But I couldn’t get them out of my mind. So I bookmarked them, pinned them, what-have-you.

Months later, scrolling through the Neiman Marcus website, I saw these.

Pale pink perfection. It was the blue Manolo Blahniks, but better, because it actually matched with my wedding theme. And it’s my fave color. Obvi.

Same story here: I bookmarked. Actually–full disclosure here, people–I opened it up as a tab in my iPhone’s browser. And kept it there for 3 months. If I restarted my phone, I went back to the page this pretty little shoe was on. I carried it around with me.

And then it sold out of my size. I DIED.

After HB resuscitated me, I tried to move on. I looked around for other shoes, but my heart was tied to my ex — that lovely little pink shoe that cost more than most human being’s mortgage payment. But I couldn’t be satisfied. My heart was broken. I would have to walk barefoot down the aisle.

And then. One day, lying in bed, I navigated once more to my iPhone’s favorite web page–and like a miracle, my size had popped back in stock.

(Well, for preorder–did I mention the shoe wouldn’t ship until three weeks before my wedding? I’m crazy.)

My heart leapt and I bit the bullet. I was like a madwoman with my iPhone pressed up to my nose trying to frantically tap in my address & payment information on the tiny screen.

I sat back, breathed a sigh of relief, and prepared to wait until April 23rd–when the Shoes were scheduled to arrive.

About a week later, I got an email from Neiman Marcus stating that my shoes had shipped and would be in my hands tomorrow. Tomorrow!!

Opening them up is a tale for another time — HB actually imposed a limit on how many times I could talk about the shoes (once per day). They’re beautiful, and they’re all mine.

They are amazing! I am among the many who have loved the blue shoes on Carrie, but finding them in your wedding theme colors? Priceless (oh if only they were, right? ^^).

  2. 03.01.2012 / 8:45 am

Good for you! They are probably some of the most gorgeous shoes around. I want them for my wedding as well (if the guy ever proposes). And it is such a SATC moment to own a pair of shoes like that. So iconic and so beautiful.
Looking forward to see your wedding dress.

Best shoe story ever, it was truly mean to be! They’re the perfect wedding shoe!

  4. 03.01.2012 / 10:13 am

o h what a story! I’m so happy for you that you finally got them! did you already try them? are they perfect? They look sooo lovely, I also would have ordered them, and for a special day you can buy shoes for 900 $ – perhaps you shouldn’t have a special day every year 😉

I tried them on and they are great! They are very, how do I put this, low cut? If that makes sense? They show a lot of toe cleavage, which I wasn’t anticipating. I will probably take them to a cobbler soon to see if there are any modifications I can make to ensure I’ll be able to wear them all day without pain. They’re not uncomfortable when putting them on, but they are 4.25″ heels, after all. And they don’t have any platform so you feel every inch of it. However, they’re so well made that I don’t anticipate them getting uncomfortable until several hours in. Here’s to breaking them in!

They are absolute perfection! I adore the pale pink color! I was one of those women who use my wedding as an excuse to buy expensive designer shoes (2 pairs to be exact); three years later I don’t regret it. Definitely a good decision!

I can’t blame you for falling in love with these beauties! they are worth every single dollar 🙂

I love them! And I can totally understand why you wanted them to be your wedding shoes! I would probably give the same amount of money, for my wedding shoes.

  8. 03.01.2012 / 1:02 pm

Amazing – they are beautiful & I’m sure your daughter will appreciate the “hand-me-down” someday!

  9. 03.01.2012 / 1:06 pm

Those are beautiful shoes! I totally support coloured shoes with a white wedding dress. I had two ceremonies (one civil/one Indian) and for the civil one where I worn a white dress, I worn bright green BCBG strappy heels with huge bows. I’m telling you they made the look! 😉

  10. 03.01.2012 / 1:27 pm

that was an amazing story. My goodness, those are beautiful <3Rory

Oh my word, shipping three weeks before the wedding!? That is STRESSFUL! Totally worth it though because those shoes are gorgeous. I love your theme, it’s super glamorous:)

  15. 03.01.2012 / 2:36 pm

They are gorgeous! I can understand the wedding shoe obsession. I staged a photo shoot for my shoes the day they arrived. I tried to rationalize my Badgley Mischkas for months before finally finding them on MyHabit for an amazing deal. Its was meant to me! Check out my photo shoot at my blog!

They are gorgeous! I understand the wedding shoe obsession. I staged a photo shoot for my shoes when they arrive. I labored over these shoes {and their price tag} for months before finding an amazing deal on them on MyHabit. It was meant to be! Check our my photos at my blog!

Beeeeauuuuutiful! Perfect! I think when you keep coming back to something, when you know you just can’t get that something out of your mind, you really have to have it! I love that they are pink. Cause it’s different and hello! You actually CAN wear them again!

    • 03.01.2012 / 6:59 pm

Thank you for enabling me, Vahni–what would I do without you??!! 🙂
I really couldn’t get these out of my mind. I would be lying if I said it’s never happened before, but this was different because it wasn’t like a, “I need it, it’s the label, it’s the name, etc.” It was: these are absolutely the most perfect wedding shoes ever. It wouldn’t be very different if they had been from payless or cost $79.99. I just might be a little happier about the whole thing if they were. 😉

I hope you will be there to see them in person!! :))))

Love the shoes! Great story too!!

  19. 03.01.2012 / 3:16 pm

dannnnnnng girl!!! you picked a good ‘un!!!! i will have absolutely ZERO guilt/problem/hesitation spending a grand on my wedding shoes. I plan on keeping my ceremony quite small and exclusive so that i can put the money where it counts–the dress, the shoes, and the food!! bing bang boom–wedding.

  20. 03.01.2012 / 3:22 pm

I love the pop of color and sparkle together – they’ll be beautiful on your wedding day!

  21. 03.01.2012 / 4:10 pm

Ok, now I am dying because I just got these same shoes (though they are the blue ones) for my wedding in September for the EXACT SAME REASON!!!! This is AWESOME that they came in your color too! I was thinking the same thing–maybe I could get the real deal because it is my wedding after all, but the price tag turned me off to that notion until I too found a knock off online that was a decent price. How amazing! I have not put them on my blog, though, because I don’t want future Hubby to see! Lovely lady! BTW I told my fiance right before we got engaged about your engagement story and post and I think it was what inspired him to propose to me the way that he did. (If you are at all interested, I did a post on it, obvi., called “That’s MRS. Frannie Pantz to you!”) Love this post!

    • 03.01.2012 / 6:57 pm

So Robin did you buy the real deal or did you end up going with a knock off? Either way you will look lovely! Twins!

      • 03.01.2012 / 9:13 pm

Oh no! I bought knock offs for sure. I think that even if I had the money to spend on the shoe, I would be hesitant to pay that much for the pair. I mean, they’re pretty and all, but . . . I don’t want my shoes to cost more than my dress. 😉

    Shoe blog?!? Do share!!

  23. 03.01.2012 / 4:18 pm

This is too cute/funny! I never thought finding the perfect shoe would be such a hard experience but your story is the second within a month that started out on a rough note! Luckily, the other bride-to-be blog that I follow ended up getting her shoes and I’m glad you did as well! They’re absolutely gorgeous! I’m a real sucker for anything pink and sparkly!!

  24. 03.01.2012 / 4:20 pm

I love this post. Definitely had me smiling and laughing out loud because I’ve absolutely had those moments of panic when I fell in love with something, saw it sell out, and the proceeded to mourn for the item for weeks thereafter. So glad you were able to procure them–can’t wait to see photos from your wedding of you wearing them! 🙂

this story made me LAUGH! swear to gosh it’s like i wrote it – so relatable and just love how you recognize that $1000 on a pair of shoes IS crazy, but justifiable… also, can i say how many times i’ve pressed my nose up to my phone to purchase something in haste?! xo

    • 03.01.2012 / 6:55 pm

I think my problem is I can justify any purchase. Well, almost any. I still haven’t justified the purchase of a Chanel bag, or anything, but it’s probably only a matter of time. This year I’ve been consumed by justifying wedding-related expenses. But luckily I have a planner who is the voice of reason!

    03.01.2012 / 5:10 pm

These are more beautiful than the blue ones. One thing I know about pre-orders from NM and Saks they always ship way earlier than they say. I guess they give you a farther date as a buffer.

    • 03.01.2012 / 6:54 pm

I had no idea about any of this, but I am sooooo glad that they came in so early. 2 months early makes it so much less stressful for my upcoming dress fittings!

  27. V
    03.01.2012 / 6:51 pm

So….how did it end? Were you able to get the shoes at a fraction of their original cost?? Confused because you said you did end up getting them Months later.

    • 03.01.2012 / 6:53 pm

No fraction of any cost! They’re full price, as all Manolo Blahnik shoes are, especially ones like these that are Spring 2012, were purchased on preorder…yeah. I paid for them and then some (sales tax is expensive!). But they’re so worth it. They’re beautiful and fit nicely!

        03.01.2012 / 7:24 pm

Yea…when it’s your wedding splurging is justified for sure 🙂 plus you know its meant to be when you cannot stop thinking about them! Also…I’m thinking these will look so cute with skinny jeans!!! LoL

  28. 03.01.2012 / 6:58 pm

HAH! Lady, I KNEW that was going to be the shoe (well, not the pink). But then, that’ll be my shoe too… so… yeah, who am I to lovingly tease? 😉

    • 03.01.2012 / 7:01 pm

No way, Ashe! You are psychic! 🙂 How awesome, we will be twinsies! I think all brides who wear these Manolo’s on their big day should form a club. 😉 Entrance fee: $945.

    • 03.01.2012 / 7:02 pm

Als0– I’m hugely in favor of a girl splurging on designer shoes for her wedding. Most items a girl won’t wear again—except the shoes and jewelry! So why not spend the big bucks on something you can wear again and will make you feel amazing?

  29. 03.01.2012 / 7:33 pm

Ah, my dream! They are gorgeous! From one shoe addict to another, I completely understand your reaction!

I guess it’s all relative, price-wise. Would you love them so much if the label said Nine West?

    • 03.01.2012 / 7:40 pm

Honestly, I’d probably love them more! (I’m a big fan of savvy shopping, despite my champagne tastes, I have a beer budget. As we like to say down here in Texas.) 🙂

  31. 03.01.2012 / 8:58 pm

You love pink so much, I can’t imagine you *not* wearing them again. Happy for you!

These are by far some of the cutest shoes I’ve seen in a long time! Forget Carrie & her “something blue” I’m sure she would blush if she saw these! You have one lucky wedding photographer! I sure wish I was the person who would get to photograph you in a stunning combo of white and blush!
Can’t wait to see the photso!

The shoes are so gorgeous. It was definitely meant to be that they ended up magically appearing in your size, and getting shipped to you sooner!!! so happy for you, they are going to look perfect with your wedding theme!

  46. 03.02.2012 / 9:22 pm

The old saying about if you are not completely decided on something then flip a coin and while its in the air whatever you are wishing for is it. You were being too strong until the shoes became unavailable then you completely KNEW they were well worth the cost to you. Good for you, now is the time to splurge and pamper yourself. They are indeed beautiful!!

  47. 03.04.2012 / 6:37 pm

I also fell in love with those shoes watching SATC. How amazing that you’ll get to wear then on your wedding day!

I know this is an old post but I stumbled across it again. I’m just a lowly receptionist who just got engaged last weekend and I’ve been doing some preemptive wedding planning and I definitely want these shoes as my Wedding Shoe. I don’t care if they end up costing more than my dress! I will own these shoes in blue. We’re not getting married until September-ish of 2014 so I have plenty of time to start packing away the pennies for these bad boys!
