Things I Love: The Statement Watch

Statement watches have been an obsession of mine since I was a youngster. When other girls were getting mermaid dolls and Polly Pockets for Christmas, I got my very first watch (it was a Wittnauer). From then on: I was hooked. The day I go without wearing a watch is a day I will feel completely naked. And I have always, always worn mens’ watches. I’m not even sure why, especially since I have like, the tiniest wrists ever. I guess I feel like mens watches (like menswear, engineer boots, or big tough red trucks*) accentuate femininity via the contrast.

One of my favorite new sites to browse in the morning over coffee & cereal before work is The Inside Source. It’s a new fashion Web Site in a magazine-style with a clean layout that features great editorial content on the latest trends and designer news. And, it’s created by eBay. Way to go, eBay! They did a post about statement watches here which I really enjoyed.

Since we can’t all afford the luxurious Chanel J12 watch or the Hermes Clipper, eBay comes in very handy. I myself am a huge, huge fan of Michael Kors watches (and sport #4 above almost every single day) because they’re pricey enough to reflect their true quality and craftsmanship, yet are attainable.

1. Zodiac | 2. Michael Kors Oversized – Rose Gold $250 | 3. Chanel J12
4. Michael Kors Jet Set Sport $250 | 5. Hermes Clipper

Thanks so much for reading, and don’t forget to check out The Inside Source! My trip to New York Fashion Week is being funded thanks to this post (which is sponsored by The Inside Source) so please support such awesomeness! Show this post (and The Inside Source) some love, please! Thank you!

*Two Fridays ago, like a genius, I rear-ended someone’s car being totally ADHD. So for a week I was literally driving around a big red Dodge truck, and it looked…hilarious.

I am obsessed with statement watches. Too many statements, so little time. Mine is set ten minutes ahead. Being punctual is so hot right now 😉

I have the MK watch- got it for my birthday from my boyfriend. I am absolutely obsessed with it!

Always happy to learn about a great 'Inside Source' 🙂 Thanks for the tip!
I was never a watch person until I met my husband, he's a fanatic and eventually passed the trait on to me… Now I can't get enough! I have a pretty decent / much cheaper version of the white Chanel. I love how the white pops, especially against dark winter colors -whoever said no white in winter didn't have a fabulous white statement watch!

That is an excellent tip, Heidi, thank you!!

You should also check out the Young Designers' market on Sundays in SoHo. Amazing jewelry vendors and vintage bag and clothing sellers are there. Just bring cash along and prepare to negotiate a bit!

Ooh I love the Chanel. I love wearing a watch as a style accessory but rarely use it for its functionality, hence I'm rarely ever on time for anything 🙂

I absolutely LOVE Michael Kohrs! Hoping that my husband will randomly read this and get a good idea for Valentines 😉

I have been lusting over #4 – the gold MK watch – for ages! I'm hesitating only because I naturally gravitate towards silver, so most of my other jewelry and accessories won't match. I do love it though!

Love a statement watch! I actually owned the Michael Kors rose gold one and loved it, BUT all the metal on the back started rubbing off immediately. Such a bummer. I wound up returning it for the acrylic "horn" colored one, which I still love, but I was really disappointed with the quality.

    • 01.27.2011 / 1:53 pm

Wow I'm sorry to hear that your MK watch wasn't of very good quality! Must have been a defect – i've been wearing my gold one for over a year now nearly every day and it hasn't shown much wear other than a few minor scratches! P.S. I loooove the horn one but never took the plunge 🙂

I bought the michael kors rose gold watch (#2 above) and love the way it looks, but i’ve only had it a few weeks and every place that the links touch, its black from rubbing. I am so so disappointed! I don’t know whether the watch is defective, but it’s nice to see that it happened to someone else and it’s not just me.

Hi there Laura,I have this problem too! I received my Rose Gold colored MK watch for Christmas and it is rubbing off near my wrist. It is already looking as terrible as a $10 faux white ceramic watch I purchased at Target!

Did you have trouble returning the watch at a MK retailer? What exactly did you do? Hopefully, I will have luck when going to the MK retail store where it was purchased this weekend.

I loveee a great watch. I just got an Invicta watch for xmas and its huge which I love even though I have small wrists.

The inside source looks cool..cant wait to check it out!

And sorry to hear about your car happens to the best of us. 🙂

Girl, I feel you. I had a watch on my wrist since before I could tell time. Watches were always that…edgy accessory that could turn your outfit into something…better! So I'm with you. And good luck in New York!!

I have teeny tiny wrists too but I went ahead and got the MK in gold for myself last year while I was pregnant (I pretty much only bought accessories while I was pregnant)! A co-worker asked me if it was a sentimental watch because it was so big on me that she thought it had belonged to my dad or something!

P.S. I am a new follower of your blog and have been catching up on older posts. I just had to tell you that you look SOOOOOO cute in your breton stripes outfit…and it was SO affordable. I am jealous…love it!

I haven't owned a watch in many years. The last one was a colorful 80ies swatch watch from the, well, 80ies.

For some weeks I have been eying any watch from Michael Kors, I love the one on gold or rosegold…

Maybe I will gift myself one for my birthday in august.

Oh My Gosh, that story is adorable! I can't imagine what your parents were thinking with their child cuvetting watches. I love the Michael Kors watch… LOVE!

Alas, one more thing to add to my WANT list.

I got this great statement watch for Christmas and while I am not usually a watch girl I find myself putting it on almost daily now. It's the perfect accent without feeling like an old-school watch. – Katy

I feel like men's watches are the perfect size. Also they seem to last longer. Most woman's watches are super trendy, blinged out, or just look cheap.

I love this post! I have been wanting a MK watch for years now, and in a week or so I will finally be getting one! I am so excited, and the rose gold is my absolute favorite.

  17. 01.27.2011 / 6:17 pm

I've had my eye on that gold Michael Kors watch! However, I can't decide between rose gold or reg. gold…I feel the reg gold makes more of a statement. We shall see.

I wish I was a watch kind of girl – I love the look of numbers 1-3… but I just can't handle having things moving on my wrist, especially because I work on the computer all day and having the watch clank against the desk constantly is not something I could deal with… same reason why I don't wear bracelets 🙁

When I was younger, I would wear pretty and dainty watches everyday, and sometime around cell phones I decided to forgo the watch for my phones digital clock. Now, I'm completely obsessed with the look of men's style watches (especially the Michael Kors ones), but I wouldn't even know how to start wearing a watch again. The only downside to my cell phone clock habit is being completely lost and late when I forget my phone at home or in the car. Gosh, I think I really need a watch. Haha!

I totally agree with you, PSS! If I'm not wearing a watch, I feel nekked! I recently was given this Michele Carousel Topaz Bezel beaut as a gift from my parents – it's bold and colorful and I absolutely LOVE it!
You're going to have a BLAST in NYC! And thanks for The Inside Source tip! I "liked" them on Facebook 😉

Michael Kors watches rock! I like that you included them as a more affordable option. I really liked this post, so I included a link to it on my Friday round-up post on my blog. 🙂 I love your blog, keep up the great work.

Thanks for including the Zodiac; I've been looking for a thinner chronograph watch, and had never heard of this brand! I love Michael Kors, too, but they're just too heavy when I try them on *tear* Hope you have an amazing time at fashion week!

I absolutely love your blog! It has a lot of useful information and it is very easy to navigate. My not so ex, ex gave me a statement watch for Christmas and at first I was like, WTF becuase it was so huge on my skinny wrist. But I grew to love the way it looks and have been eyeballing other similar once since then. I just bought an Invicta 5377 and I can't wait to rock it.
